Producing the only true Malvasia of Sardinian tradition: the oxidative style
Officially founded in 2017, Cantina Carta actually has a much longer history, beginning in 1980 with the purchase of half a hectare of vineyard in Bosa, a charming medieval town in central-western Sardinia and the birthplace of Malvasia di Bosa—an oxidative wine of tradition and one of the rarest expressions of Sardinian viticulture.
At that time, Piero Carta was only five years old, but his future as a winegrower began to take shape by watching his grandfather work the land and helping his father in the vineyards during weekends and summer.
The last to realise that this would be his path was Piero himself. After completing his studies in economics and earning a master’s degree in tourism, he chose to return to the vineyards where he grew up. At a time when the Malvasia di Bosa DOC was changing its regulations—expanding to include sparkling, sweet and fortified styles—Piero decided to focus on viticulture in order to continue producing the only true Malvasia of Sardinian tradition: the oxidative style.
The same care and attention devoted to Malvasia are reflected in vineyard management, based from the beginning on a respectful approach to soil and environment, and in the cellar, where the grapes are guided towards the most genuine expression of the raw material, the territory and its tradition.
The Malvasia grapes are harvested at the end of October and, after spontaneous fermentation, begin a slow oxidative ageing process in partially filled oak barrels. Inside the barrels, where the wine rests for at least two years, a layer of flor yeast develops, allowing controlled oxidation and giving rise to a wine that is truly unique.
