Ungrafted vines are important for biodiversity and for better adaptation to climate change.
La Casa di Sophia is a winery located on the island of Sant’Antioco. Since 2011, it has been certified organic. The estate’s Carignano del Sulcis DOC vineyards are 45, 57, 77 and over 100 years old.
La Casa di Sophia cultivates and produces its wines using both traditional and organic practices, including: organic farming of old vineyards close to the sea; sandy and clay soils; on-site vinification in a cellar located near the vineyards; ungrafted vines (own-rooted, not grafted onto rootstocks); spontaneous fermentations; blending of young wines from three separate vineyards; light filtration; and ageing and storage at controlled temperature using solar energy.
In particular, ungrafted vines are important for biodiversity and for better adaptation to climate change. The island of Sant’Antioco has preserved pre-phylloxera, own-rooted vines. The roots can penetrate deeply into the sandy soils, reaching layers where phylloxera cannot survive.
The specific terroir, strongly influenced by the proximity to the sea, gives the Carignano del Sulcis wines distinctive characteristics. The wines show intense aromas, light tannins, a bright red colour, balanced acidity and a marked minerality that reflects the nearby sea.
The winery produces two wines: La Casa di Sophia and Istmo. The differences between them are linked to the age of the vines and the composition of the vineyard soils. Yields are low, and annual production ranges between 2,500 and 3,500 bottles. Three vintages will be presented: 2021, 2023 and 2024.
