In line with local traditions, vinification takes place in an ancient cave carved by hand into the tuff rock.
La Torretta is located in Grottaferrata, just outside Rome, in the area known as the Castelli Romani.
The estate is certified organic (Sidel) and biodynamic (Demeter). It produces wine exclusively from its own grapes and also focuses on honey and extra virgin olive oil.
Maria and Riccardo, the minds and hearts behind this project, strongly believe in working according to nature, with the aim of enhancing the agricultural tradition of this historic and remarkable area.
Farming
The use of biodynamic preparations—such as horn manure (500 and 500P)—supports root development and enhances biodiversity across the vineyards, orchards and vegetable gardens. Seasonal cover crops and compost enriched with biodynamic preparations are used to improve soil fertility and retain moisture, helping plants respond to climate change.
In spring and during leaf development, horn silica (preparation 501) is applied to support the role of light in photosynthesis. Treatments with copper and sulphur are used only when strictly necessary.
The estate also hosts several bee families, supporting pollination and contributing to the protection of bees, which are increasingly affected by climate change.
Winery
La Torretta has a long winemaking tradition and has belonged to Riccardo Magno’s family for generations. In line with local traditions, vinification takes place in an ancient cave carved by hand into the tuff rock. The cellar’s natural structure helps maintain stable temperatures for ageing wines in barrels.
The cave was likely excavated during the construction of an ancient cistern (around 100 BC), which still forms the foundation of the farmhouse. Materials such as flint and pozzolana, found during excavation, were traditionally used in Roman mortar to waterproof cisterns.
Products
La Torretta produces natural wines as well as extra virgin olive oil, honey, preserves, fruit and vegetables. The estate currently produces six wine labels: Bolle di Grotta, Torretta, Castagna, Zia Malva, Marciana, Rosa and Ventitre.
Family
The La Torretta estate was acquired in the second half of the 19th century by Riccardo’s family. At that time, the property was extensive and supplied wine to many taverns in Rome and the Castelli area.
Today, La Torretta remains a family-run estate, led by Maria Enqvist and Riccardo Magno together with their children. The products reflect a deep connection between the family’s history and the land they cultivate.
